Children bring color and life into our studio, but as a photographer, it’s always good to have a few tricks up your sleeve. Since we’ve photographed so many children through the years, we thought we’d give you a look inside our studio to see what happens when we work with small children.
Smiling helps little ones feel welcomed and open up to the camera. Often they don’t need to be told to smile, they love meeting new people. Also, beautiful shots don’t absolutely require smiles; authenticity is engaging on its own. We take the time to introduce ourselves, the equipment and what we do – children are curious beings. Also we ask what hobbies they have and what they love to draw. We start the session by showing them the buttons, what the camera does and what sounds it makes. Soon they’re at ease in front of it.
Having a few props or toys in the studio is important, and we often ask parents to bring a couple of items that their child loves. We want the studio to feel like a friendly place, plus play helps befriend the camera too! Allowing them to guide the poses depends on their personality. When they’re comfortable, we’re able to capture their essence. That’s why we talk to them on their level and sometimes play music to inspire free and candid movements.
They deliver lots of colorful personalities and expressions. The eyes are the windows to the soul, and this is particularly true of children. They may burst with light, fill with wonder, or smile softly with shyness – but they’re all unique, which is exactly what we are looking for. With a bit of warming up, children are the embodiment of ‘’being yourself.’’ Adults need to be reminded that perfection doesn’t exist, but not so much with children! Play and fun are still a part of their daily paradigm.
Let this be a reminder to all of us to have more fun and play in our day!
